Central Picoiquen is an electricity generation project located in the IX Region of Chile, consisting of a 19.2 MW run-of-river hydroelectric power plant that harnesses the water flow of the Picoiquen River. By supplying clean electricity to the grid, the project has a direct environmental benefit by avoiding the emission of more than 26,000 tCO2e each year.
Project details
- Location: IX Region, Chile
- Category: Hydroelectric Power
- Standard: CDM
The project has favored the replacement of thermoelectric plants that have operated in the SIC system and contributed to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which otherwise would have been generated by the operation of these plants.
In addition, it has generated new job opportunities for the local community, contributing to poverty reduction and the development of basic services that lead to an improvement in the living standards of the community. Employment was required during construction and is still required in its operation, which indirectly generates economic benefits in the area by increasing its commercial activity.
