The REDD+ project is located in the state of Acre, Brazil, and its objective is to protect up to 200,000 hectares of rainforest from deforestation and land use pressures for cattle ranching, contributing to a reduction of more than 1,200,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
Project details
- Location: Brazil
- Category: Forest Preservation Area
- Standard: VERRA
The project preserves both biodiversity and a wide range of ecosystem services in a region that is home to endangered and/or endemic tropical birds such as the blue-headed macaw and the Amazon parrot, as well as threatened tree species such as the bigleaf mahogany.
In terms of alternative sources of income and employment opportunities for residents, the project offers training in agricultural extension, granting land tenure to residents, employing locals as deforestation patrols and operating programs to market the collection, transport and sale of medicinal plants and açaí. Work is also underway to increase local water quality and improve agricultural conditions by retaining topsoil and controlling erosion.
