The project is located in the state of Acre, Brazil, and aims to protect and conserve a tropical forest area of more than 28,000 hectares through activities aimed at reducing deforestation, contributing to a reduction of more than 150,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

Project details
  • Location: State of Acre, Brazil
  • Category: Forest Preservation Area
  • Standard: VERRA

The project results in less environmental degradation than would have occurred if the land had been converted to grazing or cultivation.

Environmental benefits include:
Improving water quality for the local communities of the Juruá and Valparaíso rivers
Land secured for natural flood storage (decreasing the detrimental impacts of floods)
Critical habitat was maintained for wildlife, including 26 threatened and endangered species.

Community benefits include:
-Facilitate community outreach and education.
-Employ local community members as forest guards or other project staff, thus replacing other sources of income associated with deforestation and land use.
-Provide agricultural extension training to help increase productivity on existing lands, thereby reducing pressure to expand farms into adjacent forests.
-Construction of a local processing plant to industrialize açai production.
-Modernization of community cassava houses
-Supporting local farmers’ association
-Helping communities to obtain land tenure
-Share a portion of carbon-related revenues for communities living on the Valparaiso property (replacing other sources of income associated with deforestation and land use).
